ABDOMINAL PAIN
Abdominal pain is very common, affecting 25â30 percent of the population. Most people have experienced abdominal pain at some point in their life. Luckily, it does not frequently indicate the existence of a serious illness. Pain intensity does not always reflect the seriousness of the illness that causes it. Sharp abdominal pain can be caused by mild illnesses like gas or gastroenteritis, while another light pain can present in more serious illnesses like colon cancer or appendicitis.
There are many organs in the abdomen, and abdominal pain can come from any of these: organs related to digestion (stomach, esophagus, large and small intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas); the aorta (which passes through the abdomen); the appendix; the kidneys, and the spleen. But the pain can also come from another area (referred pain), like the chest or pelvic area.
If the pain is localized (affecting one area of the abdomen) it is probably indicative of a problem in one of the organs, like the appendix, gallbladder, or stomach (like an ulcer).
Colic pain is due to torsion, obstruction or spasms in the smooth muscle that forms the various abdominal viscera. This pain is characterized as being episodic, that is to say it comes in waves, beginning and ending suddenly with frequency and intensity. Kidney and gallbladder stones are common causes of this type of abdominal pain.
The most worrying symptoms are pain that happens frequently, lasts more than 24 hours, or is accompanied by a fever.
As to the possible causes of abdominal pain we find: appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix), intestinal obstruction, cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) with or without stones, chronic constipation, aortic aneurism, diverticulitis, food allergy or poisoning, epidemic viral gastroenteritis), heartburn, indigestion or gastroesophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, kidney stones, ulcers, pancreatitis, urinary tract infections, menstrual pain.
DIET
When experiencing stomach pain, it is important to abstain from drinking alcohol or coffee, and smoking. Tobacco is a great enemy of a healthy stomach and can provoke harmful effects that assist in the development of and the prevention of healing most gastric illnesses: ulcers, gastritis, cancer, and dyspepsia. At the gastric level, tobacco increases the secretion of acid, reduces the secretion of bicarbonate, mucus and prostaglandins, as well as decreases the flow of gastric mucus.
Spicy and fatty foods will also worsen symptoms over time.
PHYTOTHERAPY
Some medicinal plants can work wonders in the case of stomach pain. Here are some examples:
